Progress, Despite All

"Progress, however glacial, is still Progress."

I don't know who said that, but it has saved my sanity a few times.

And I am getting into a series of completions despite the intrusion of some nasty real-world problems on several channels.

But there are obstacles within the goals.

For example, KDP. Kindle Direct Publishing has replaced the old Kindle system, which worked. But doesn't for me. It is required that I move books over from the original Kindle system and it will not connect. It sits and spins and spins and spins. but I'll keep hammering on it.

But the first of the releases will make me no money. Which is the design. it is the 2019 edition of SIMPLE DIRECTIONS, A Guide to a 4th Step Inventory. This was originally published in 2019 and has been spiffed up. It is still a very easy to follow set of directions to do a 4th Step Inventory with Dr. Bob's version of a summary for Steps 1-2, plus a few words to help with Steps 5-7.

Yeah, I know. I'm the worst possible example of "Anonymous" for 12-Step Recovery. But as a friend of mine is fond of saying: "Everybody knew me as a drunken asshole. Now I'm a sober asshole. It's a move up." What are they going to do - ruin my reputation beyond what I did?

I did not write it. I put it together based on writings over the past 60 years by autonomous groups of AA for their own use, a great simple notebook system that became popular in the 1990s and detailed through talks on xa-speakers.org (a great resource for anyone who needs some upbeat input when away from their usual groups), plus some original comments on expanding the focus beyond the usual list of failings to include Assets and Gifts. With the quotes from the AA "Big Book" and "Twelve & Twelve" to back it up.

It is a freebie. That is why it won't make me money, which is my big focus of pushing for newly published material.

But it is rewarding. I have watched a lot of guys use the guide to actually move into inventory and march on to their "Amends" part of the Step process. And I get a lot out of that. Rewards you can't take to the bank.

So - how to get it. Free downloads and if you get a copy you are free to share the electronic file within the terms of the Creative Commons "No Commercial Use, No Alterations, Full Attribution" license. You can't revise it for yourself and republish as if you came up with it, you give credit where credit is due, you do not charge for it (beyond actual photocopy costs, if anyone uses photocopy any more). Share the whole PDF or print out pages you think apply and hand them to who you want to help.

You can download a "trade paperback" PDF, which works well on Tablets, and a "US Letter" version for printing as you need to, and both version are going up today on archive.org. Feel free to share the URL with anyone, or download the PDF you prefer and share that. I'll post the link as soon as Archive.org notifies me the page is there.

Free to download, free to share is the line I've used for many years.

Printed booklets are another thing. "Print on demand" allow physical copies to be produced in "quantity = one" to be printed, bound, trimmed, and mailed to you. it seems expensive to me, but I'm an old man and spoiled by growing up with 5¢ candy bars and 10¢ comic books. $4.25 (plus shipping) seems a lot to me, and they do not have bulk discounts, but Lulu.com makes the books available. I've ordered a few.

I will make a bit less than 75¢ for each copy sold. I will not be "rolling in it" and have dug a good sized pit with previous web domain and hosting charges for "anonymousreview.com," "sponsormagazine.com," "sponsormagazine.info," and "wayofserive.info." All to push out the previous projects - Sponsor Magazine, Recovery Reader (book), and my most recent attempt, The Way of Service. They didn't set the world on fire and cost money to host for the world to ignore. So, that's where the money goes. Full disclosure.

You can get the Lulu.com versions at This Page. If you want to hold a book in your hand.

And I have been trying to put the book up on Amazon.com, but their Kindle system is being a bit farty. It would be nice to make it available to the world, should they look. But it is the usual Amazon headache. I need to learn the Amazon headache any way for the commercial releases that will start hitting next week, so why not invest that "learning" curve into a project that means a lot to me.

I'll post that information when it becomes available.

Progress. It's a good word.
